SSMTP a simple MTA

To install on Ubuntu or Debian

sudo apt-get install ssmtp

Specify your mailhub. My ISP is eclipse.net so i put smtp.eclipse.co.uk.

>sudo nano /etc/ssmtp/ssmtp.conf
...
mailhub=smtp.eclipse.co.uk
...

Test:

echo testing | mail -s Bla me@gmail.com

If you get an error such as...

send-mail: Cannot open mail:25 Can't send mail:
sendmail process failed with error code 1

Then you should check your mailhub settings in ssmtp.conf

Other problems

For some reason this had edited my inetd.conf smtp settings. ( although more likely attributed to when i uninstalled sendmail )

sudo nano /etc/inetd.conf
